That name has been circulating for almost twenty years. Since 2008, to be precise. I’m just surprised that now it comes from a major agency like Reuters, which has no shortage of serious investigations to pursue. The first time, after all, it surfaced in a British gossip tabloid that thrives on this type of story.

In Banksy’s case, anonymity has also been a form of protection. Much of his work is political, critical, and at times uncomfortable. Remaining unknown has meant safeguarding both his personal security and his freedom of expression.

Even if his work were not political, his identity should still not be exposed for a very simple reason: he never wanted it to be. It is a matter of respect.

And it is exactly as you wrote, Tim: respecting anonymity is rule number one for every street art fan. ANONYMITY IS PART OF THE CULTURE.
