How a small town in the heart of Puglia became 'Italy's best kept street art secret' when a group of locals decided to invite street artists. A story of changing the fate of town with urban art!
Origins: A dream painted on walls
The story begins with Stornara Life, a group of locals who decided to bring contemporary art into their quiet town. “Stornara has always had an agricultural-based economy and no real tourist attractions,” the organizers recall. “Street art seemed to us the quickest and most contemporary way to create beauty and attract tourism.”
That first edition in 2018 was, by their own admission, a leap into the unknown. With little experience but plenty of passion, the group reached out to nearby artists for guidance. Rather than mimicking other festivals, they created their own model—built on trust, openness, and community spirit.
Growing into a global festival
From those early days, Stramurales has grown dramatically in scale, style, and scope. What began with local artists now welcomes muralists from every corner of the world. Visitors to Stornara’s walls can witness every technique imaginable: spray paint, brushes, stencils, paste-ups, and mixed media.
Behind the scenes, the work is intense. A core team of four or five people prepares the festival for months, joined by dozens more volunteers during the event itself. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, several media outlets have spoken about Stornara.
One of the most tangible milestones came with the opening of an info point in summer of 2025, funded by the national TOCC grant, offering visitors a dedicated hub to explore the mural park.
Impact on the city and community
Stramurales has altered Stornara’s identity forever. Once unaccustomed to tourists, the town now welcomes individuals, groups, and even school trips who arrive to see its 150+ murals. Where once art was hardly discussed, it is now an everyday topic.
The community plays a vital role: residents bring water, food, and shade to artists braving the summer heat, and elderly townsfolk watch in awe as walls transform before their eyes. Local schools have also been inspired. In 2022, the Academy of Fine Arts of Foggia launched the Moda Murales project, where fashion students designed garments inspired by mural details.
Artistic vision: freedom first
Selection each year is led by artistic director Lino Lombardi, who looks not for fame but for variety. Dozens of artists, including well-known names, apply to take part, many of them eager to return. Both international stars and emerging local talents are welcomed, and every artist receives the same respect, support, and creative freedom.
This philosophy sets Stramurales apart. Unlike other festivals, Stornara Life never requires sketches for approval or interferes with color choices. Artists are trusted completely, and the result is a collection of works that push boundaries and spark conversation.
Some murals are especially provocative, like those by Spanish artist Toni Espinar, whose works reference Christianity or depict themes such as a “pregnant man.” These images have inspired debate, wonder, and sometimes controversy, proof of art’s power to challenge.
Memorable moments and challenges
If one image captures the spirit of Stramurales, it is Espinar’s Don Quixote of Stornara, a mural embodying resilience in the face of obstacles. For the organizers, challenges have come not only from logistics but sometimes from within the community itself. Still, each edition has pushed forward, buoyed by unexpected international recognition and the loyalty of returning artists.
Funding and support
The first two editions were entirely self-financed with help from locals. Since 2020, regional funding has helped secure its future. Citizens still contribute, some even donating funds themselves.
Artists are provided with travel, food, accommodation, and materials, along with a modest fee. “Everyone receives the same,” the organizers explain, emphasizing equality over hierarchy.
Why Street Art matters
For Stornara, street art is more than decoration, it is dialogue. It places contemporary issues directly in the public space, open to everyone, free of charge. Like life itself, it changes, fades, and sometimes disappears, but it leaves its mark on those who see it.
Looking ahead
Stornara Life’s dream goes beyond the annual festival: to create an artist residency open to creatives from all fields. Future editions will continue to explore broad, universal themes, freedom, resistance, change, while leaving space for the unexpected.
And though Stramurales has already welcomed some of the most celebrated names in street art, the organizers remain open: “We don’t rule out welcoming others in the future.”
The role of Street Art Cities
A crucial ally has been the Street Art Cities platform, which mapped and geolocated Stornara’s murals, turning them into a walkable, interactive route. It also amplified the town’s story to a global audience.
The organizers are eager for more collaborations: “Street Art Cities has allowed us to share our murals with the world. We hope for new opportunities together.”
Tim, co-founder and community manager visited in summer of 2025 and was pleasantly surprised: “This town welcomed me with some astonishing murals, but the real surprise came with Giancarla giving me a tour and sharing the stories that the murals tell. Her experience with all the visiting artists, some even my personal friends, give you a memorable tour, so if you plan to visit, make sure to ask for the grand tour!” : shares Tim. “Over the years I’ve visited big metropolises like Paris, Berlin and London all known for their legacy in urban art. But this fire is dying, while in these little towns like Stornara, when urban art is being introduced, you see that fire burning again. In the eyes of the organizers, but also within all the local people who welcome all the new visitors, eager to share their pride of this unexpected turnaround of a sleeping town.”: Tim continues.
Epilogue: a town transformed
Once overlooked, Stornara is now a shining star on the global street art map. Its walls roar with color, its people embrace their new role as hosts, and its story has reached audiences from London to New York to Sydney.
In the flutter of wings and the stroke of a brush, Stornara has proven that even the smallest of towns can reinvent themselves, and soar.
