Lo Scacciapensieri
In the heart of Alcamo, Sicily, a towering mural now pulses with color, symbolism, and sound. Internationally acclaimed street artist Millo has unveiled “Lo Scacciapensieri”, his latest large-scale work created for the Urban Sunrise Alcamo project, a transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing the Maria Ausiliatrice neighborhood through art and social engagement.
A visual instrument of memory and hope
The mural’s title refers to the marranzano, a traditional Sicilian jaw harp known for its twangy, meditative resonance. Millo reimagines this instrument as a metaphorical force, a “thought-dispeller”, as if a “scacciapensieri” could help us throw our hearts over every obstacle, becoming at the same time, roots and impulse toward the future. Watching Millo creating this mural, gave me a unique insight in his MO. After sketching the main subject and filling the wall with colored shapes, the real magic started. I found out that he creates the background on the spot, rather than referencing real streets or sketching from photographs, Millo carries an entire mental metropolis with him. Over years of drawing, observing, and refining, he has developed a personal vocabulary of rooftops, windows, staircases, antennas, balconies, and facades. These elements live in his imagination like modular pieces, building blocks he can rearrange at will.
When he paints, he doesn’t map out a literal place. He constructs a city that feels familiar but belongs entirely to his inner world. It’s why his murals resonate across continents: they’re not tied to a single geography, but to the universal experience of urban life.

Art as urban pulse
“Lo Scacciapensieri” is more than a mural, it’s a cultural intervention and part of the Urban Sunrise Alcamo project, supported by public funding through Italy’s Missione 5 of the PNRR, invited artists to transform 14 buildings and several interiors into canvases of collective renewal.
