Meet the Hunters: the guardians of your city’s Street Art
Street art is alive. It shifts, fades, gets painted over, and reinvents itself. Keeping track of this ever‑changing landscape is a community effort — and at the heart of that effort are our hunters.
Hunters are the Street Art Cities community members responsible for maintaining the artworks in a specific city. They document new pieces, update existing ones, and help ensure that the information on the platform stays accurate and inspiring. Think of them as the caretakers of your local street art ecosystem.
How to become a Hunter
Anyone with a passion for street art can apply to become a hunter. When you sign up, your request is reviewed by a Country Manager or a member of the Street Art Cities core team. They consider a few key things:
Your affinity with street art and/or photography
Any links you’ve shared (website, Instagram, Flickr, portfolio)
How many hunters are already active in the city you’ve chosen
Once approved, you’ll gain access to the Hunter Dashboard, your workspace for adding, updating, and maintaining artworks in your city.
Why only Hunters can upload artworks
Street Art Cities intentionally adds a few hurdles before someone can upload artworks. This isn’t gatekeeping, it’s quality‑keeping. More on this in our other post.
By limiting uploads to hunters, we ensure:
High‑quality photos and accurate information
Consistency across cities and countries
Long‑term stewardship, because street art changes constantly
Updating old artworks is just as important as adding new ones. Hunters help keep the map honest by marking pieces as removed, repainted, vandalized, or relocated.
Community Notes: everyone can contribute
You don’t need to be a hunter to help keep your city’s street art up to date. Community Notes are how Street Art Cities app users can suggest changes or additions to artworks and places listed on the platform.
How to add a Community Note
Navigate to an artwork or place details page in the app.
Just below the artwork image, you’ll find a list of options you can choose from:
Seen: I’ve spotted the artwork (lets us know it’s still there!)
Can’t locate: I haven’t been able to find it
Removed: I know for certain it’s gone
Painted over: Something else has replaced it
Vandalised: It has been tagged or damaged
Incorrect artist: The listed artist is wrong
Wrong image: The image doesn’t match the artwork or location
Comment: Leave a general note
Every option except Seen allows you to add text and images for context, incredibly helpful for hunters reviewing updates.
Where Community Notes appear
Community Notes are visible to everyone:
In the app, they appear in a dedicated section below the artwork description
On the website, they show up next to the artwork description
This transparency helps visitors understand the current status of a piece and gives hunters the information they need to keep the platform accurate.
How Hunters use Community Notes
Hunters receive notifications whenever a new Community Note is posted in their city. These appear in their Hunter Dashboard inbox, where they can quickly review, verify, and update artworks as needed.
It’s a simple system, but it’s one of the most powerful ways the community supports itself.
Not ready to become a Hunter? You can still make a difference
Even without the hunter badge, your contributions matter.
Mark artworks as ‘Seen’ to confirm they’re still standing
Leave Community Notes when something has changed
Share context, photos, or corrections to help hunters keep the map accurate
