Best of 2025 nominee: introducing REDL
Redl’s nomination for Street Art Cities’ Best of 2025 highlights a year defined by intense workload, technical challenges, and creative problem‑solving.
Redl painted this for the 2nd edition of the Street Art Frauenfeld Festival and is the only Swiss nomination in the BEST OF 2025 award.
The artist describes 2025 as a period packed with projects that required careful scheduling to avoid burnout while still giving each mural the attention it deserved. Among them, the nominated piece stands out not only for its visual impact but for the complexity of the wall itself.
The façade’s wavy, uneven surface forced Redl to rethink his original concept and redesign the imagery to work with the architecture rather than against it. This adaptation became central to the mural’s success. Yet the environment continued to shift: a large tree that originally obscured part of the wall, and whose reflection Redl had painted into the windows and the “fake door”, was unexpectedly cut back after the mural was completed. This change altered the real reflections, prompting the artist to repaint sections to include the newly visible white building across the street. It’s a detail most viewers would never consciously notice, but it reflects the meticulous care behind the work.
Looking at the broader street art landscape, Redl sees no clear stylistic trends — only an explosion of diversity that’s increasingly difficult to track. After more than 30 years as an independent urban artist, and only one international festival appearance, he hints that it may finally be time to explore Europe. For now, he continues developing new studio pieces, keeping future plans deliberately quiet.
