The day a neighbour’s complaint erased a goddess

The removal of Hestia didn’t come from vandalism, deterioration, or a citywide plan.
It came from one neighbour.

At a residents’ meeting, a neighbour claimed the heat inside his apartment was caused by the mural’s black background. Temperatures in Murcia had been extreme in recent weeks, hotter than usual and the building’s poor insulation made the wall feel like a radiator. He blamed the mural.

And the community of owners decided: paint it white.

No consultation.
No technical evaluation.
No conversation with the artists.
Just an immediate, irreversible decision.

Both artists learned about the removal as it was happening.

Legally, the mural belongs to the neighbours’ association, even though it was funded by Murcia City Council. The council cannot intervene. The owners can repaint whenever they want, even if the reasoning is flawed.

And according to local insight:

A mural erased for nothing.

The making of Hestia: sweat, cranes, and mythology

Nels remembers the intensity

Long days fighting the crane, the height, the logistics, but also the excitement of creating a monumental piece with a friend. A mural with purpose, scale, and symbolism.

Kraser remembers the absurdity

He didn’t yet have a crane operator’s license.
He went to take the exam.
The examiner arrived late, while Kraser was already working on the hardest part of the wall.
He climbed down, and the examiner simply said:

A perfect anecdote for a mural born from improvisation, effort, and joy.

A mural’s life cycle and an unnatural death

Both artists accept that murals disappear.
They work in the street; they know the rules of the game.

But this case was different.

For Kraser it’s obvious that murals have their own life cycle. They fade, they get repainted, they die.
But in Hestia’s case

What remains and what’s lost

Nels doesn’t dwell on legacy, he’s always creating. He hardly found time for our interview.
But he hopes this case pushes cities to rethink how murals are managed, preserved, and removed.
He and Kraser already use high‑quality paints, sealants, varnishes, now they’re thinking about management, communication, and artist involvement.

Kraser knows people who passed the mural every day on their way to work.
He knows it became part of their routine, their landscape, their sense of place.
Now, he says,

And yes, he’ll still use black backgrounds.
But now he’ll consider the local temperature before doing so.

A black background that became a political battlefield

In the end, it was the mural’s black background, the very element that gave Hestia her dramatic presence, that sealed her fate. A single neighbour complained that the dark façade was heating up his apartment, and in the middle of an unusually scorching summer in Murcia, the residents’ association decided to act. Legally, the mural belonged to them, even though it was funded and promoted by the city. So they covered it up. Just like that.

The irony?

Locals say that once the wall is white, they won’t notice any difference in temperature. The problem wasn’t the paint, it was the building’s insulation. Yet the mural became the scapegoat.

What’s next: no more black murals?

It feels absurd, but what’s truly shocking is how easily the city let this happen. Murcia invested in this artwork, celebrated it as a landmark, used it as cultural capital… and then watched it disappear without lifting a finger. We’ve seen this pattern in so many places: officials love murals on inauguration day, but when a problem arises, they vanish, ignoring the cultural and emotional impact these works have on daily life.

Murcia, you should feel ashamed of letting go so easily.
Look at Alcantarilla, your “little” neighbour: a small town that embraces street art wholeheartedly and continues to invest in it with limited resources. They understand what murals mean to a community.

I feel lucky to have seen Hestia in 2024 during my travels. As a longtime admirer of Kraser since meeting him in Italy, witnessing this collaboration felt special. At its heart stood Hestia, the ancient Greek goddess of the hearth, home, and hospitality — reimagined as a contemporary guardian of Murcia’s culinary identity. Surrounded by fruits, vegetables, lush vegetation, and abstract graphic elements, she embodied the region’s fertile orchards and Mediterranean spirit.

And although the wall is now blank, the mural is not lost.

Gone but not forgotten and never lost

Hestia is gone from the wall, but her story is now louder than her image ever was.

Her disappearance exposes how fragile urban art is, even when monumental, even when municipally commissioned, even when loved. It reveals the gap between creation and preservation, and why artists must be part of the conversation when murals are altered or removed.

But there is one place where Hestia still lives.

On Street Art Cities, artworks never truly disappear.
They are archived, documented, and preserved, leaving a lifetime trace that outlives the wall itself. The mural may have been erased physically, but its story, its imagery, and its impact remain accessible, part of a global memory built by the very community that cared about it.

Murcia lost a goddess.
But she remains in the archive, in the collective memory, and in the ongoing conversation about how cities value their cultural fabric.

Created during the ARDPOP‑UP Festival* in Oslo, a historic, small‑scale street art and graffiti event held in November 2012, organised by All Rights Destroyed (ARD) and dot dot dot, this monochrome mural by Phlegm once stood as a quiet but unmistakable landmark in the city’s urban landscape.

Its absence didn’t go unnoticed. Several Street Art Cities users flagged the mural as disappeared through the platform’s social features '(as shown in screenshot below), prompting a wave of memories, questions, and a renewed appreciation for the piece. In many ways, the community itself became the first archive of its loss.

What remains now is memory, both collective and personal. And in true Phlegm fashion, that’s exactly where he believes the real value of a mural resides.

Local and hunter Per Haram recalls the mural:

A winter wall, a first snow, and a Brazilian Without a Coat

remembers painting the Oslo mural vividly. It was the city’s first proper snowfall of the year, the kind that blankets everything, including the artist’s lift, faster than you can clear it.

He wasn’t painting alone. Among the group was an artist from Brazil, experiencing snow for the very first time. He hadn’t even brought a proper coat. The scene reads like a comic panel from one of Phlegm’s own books: a surreal, slightly absurd moment of camaraderie, cold fingers, and shared creativity.

These are the kinds of memories that stick with him, not the finished wall, but the lived moment of making it.

“I’ve always seen murals as an alternative to a coat of paint.”

When asked whether he knew the mural had been removed, Phlegm’s answer is disarmingly simple: he doesn’t keep track.

For him, murals are not monuments. They’re not meant to be preserved like relics or guarded as legacy pieces. They’re expressions of energy, alive in the moment of creation, and then released.

It’s a perspective that often surprises people, especially those who lived with the mural for years. For locals, the piece became a landmark, something woven into their daily walk to the nearby art school or the big art shop around the corner. But for Phlegm, the attachment ends the moment the lift comes down.

The natural life cycle of a wall

Does the loss sting? Not really.

Phlegm compares it to aging: not always pleasant, but undeniably natural.

His work has always embraced impermanence. Growing up painting in abandoned buildings, he learned early that walls are temporary companions. The moment of completion is the true reward; everything after that is a bonus.

Even the durability of his black‑and‑white palette, surprisingly stable in the sun, was never chosen with longevity in mind.

What should be remembered?

If there’s anything Phlegm hopes people carry with them now that the mural is gone, it’s not the image itself. It’s the way the mural became part of someone’s life.

Street art at its best becomes a backdrop to personal history. The Oslo mural did exactly that.

Documenting the ephemeral: a time machine for walls

With the mural now part of Oslo’s past, tools like Street Art Cities’ new Timeline feature take on a special significance. Phlegm appreciates the idea of treating streets like living archives,places where layers of tags, murals, and overpaints form a fast‑moving visual history.

The Timeline doesn’t try to freeze murals in time. Instead, it acknowledges their movement, how they appear, fade, and make room for what comes next.

And thanks to the community flagging the Oslo mural’s disappearance, its story now has a proper place in that evolving record.

A wall that lived well

Phlegm’s Oslo mural may be gone, but it lived a long (almost a decade), meaningful life. It weathered snowstorms, watched students grow up, and became a quiet companion to countless daily routines.

Its disappearance isn’t a tragedy. It’s part of the rhythm of street art, a rhythm Phlegm has always embraced.

Gone, yes.
But forgotten?
Not by the people who walked past it every day, and not by the community who made sure its absence didn’t go unnoticed.

Who is Phlegm?

Phlegm is a Sheffield based street artist, illustrator, and storyteller known for his intricate black‑and‑white imagery and instantly recognisable visual universe. Emerging from the DIY zine and comic culture of the early 2000s, he first gained attention through self‑published books filled with surreal characters, mechanical contraptions, and dreamlike narratives. These early works laid the foundation for the distinctive world he would later expand onto walls across the globe.

His murals often feature elongated figures, whimsical machines, and fantastical ecosystems, all rendered with meticulous linework that reflects his background in illustration. Despite his international reputation, Phlegm maintains a deeply grounded approach to muralism. He embraces the ephemeral nature of street art, seeing each wall as a temporary extension of his imagination rather than a permanent monument. Follow his adventures on Instagram.

Over the years, he has painted in cities worldwide, from abandoned industrial sites to major festivals, always bringing a sense of quiet wonder and narrative depth. Today, over 75 of his murals can be discovered and explored on Street Art Cities, offering a broad view of his evolving visual universe and the global footprint of his work.

Painted in February 2020 for UrVanity Madrid, in collaboration with Artrust (Melano, Switzerland), “Offset” quickly became one of those murals that locals didn’t just pass by, they lived with it. And when the wall began to fail, the mural’s fate became inevitable. We were fortunate to be in town to watch Nevercrew in person:

“Did you know your mural has left the building?”

Nevercrew did.
They were informed as soon as the removal work began.

The wall had been suffering from structural issues for months, and the mural was already visibly deteriorating. The artists knew intervention would eventually be necessary.

Still, they believe communication matters:

“Informing the artists would certainly be a form of respect and appreciation… With today’s technologies it really takes very little effort to communicate.”

Street art lives in public space, but that doesn’t sever the connection with its creators. A simple heads‑up goes a long way.

Memories from Madrid: A lively neighborhood, a strange moment in time

“Offset” was born in a vibrant moment, UrVanity 2020, just before the world changed.

Nevercrew remembers:

“Painting in that context was something we really enjoyed. The neighborhood is incredibly lively and from the very beginning they made us feel welcome, just as we later felt the affection that developed for the painting we created.
That moment is also connected to less pleasant memories, because while we were in Madrid the first cases of COVID appeared in Europe and the last days were marked by a certain level of concern about returning home.”

“Fortunately, what has remained above all is the pleasant memory of the atmosphere of the place and the positive reaction of the local community.”

The mural became part of that moment, bright, energetic, and unknowingly perched on the edge of a global shift.

Loss as part of the Street Art life cycle

After 30 years of painting, Nevercrew has learned to accept the ephemeral nature of their medium.

“An artwork, once realized, becomes part of the context… and changes together with it.”

But acceptance doesn’t mean indifference.

Some works stick with you.
Some losses sting a little more.

“Offset” was one of those.

What should be remembered now that it’s gone?

If you ask Nevercrew, it’s not the technique, the scale, or even the concept they hope people hold onto.

It’s the feeling.

“The neighborhood was very fond of our painting… It would make us happy to know that the memory of these emotions remains.”

A mural is never just paint on a wall, it’s a relationship. And this one clearly meant something to the people who lived with it.

Does a disappearance change how they work?

Not immediately. The loss is still fresh.

But every vanished mural leaves subtle traces, lessons, reflections, adjustments.

From a practical point of view, and speaking more generally, a lot depends on the reason why a work disappears. Over time, through these situations, we have certainly learned to evaluate conditions before intervening, precisely to avoid, when and where possible, that works deteriorate or disappear for reasons unrelated to the normal evolution of the context and the passing of time.

In this case, there’s even a silver lining:

“There’s interest from many parts in trying to do something… maybe there will be the occasion to really create continuity with the disappeared mural.”

A disappearance might become a beginning.

On Street Art Cities’ new Timeline feature

Nevercrew is enthusiastic about tools that help preserve the memory of ephemeral works.

“It is certainly very interesting both as an archive and as a reference… We personally also have the habit of documenting and archiving the evolution of our murals.”

In a world where images circulate fast and disappear even faster, structured archives matter more than ever.

Street art is diverse, technically, geographically, logistically.
A timeline helps bring order to that beautiful chaos.

A wall gone, a memory that stays

“Offset” may no longer stand in Madrid, but its presence hasn’t vanished. It lives on in photos, in stories, and, most importantly, in the affection of the people who walked past it every day.

Some murals disappear. The good ones stay with us.

Gone, yes.
But not forgotten.

Some murals disappear quietly. Others vanish in a cloud of dust, leaving behind a shockwave of memories, photos, and stories from the people who once stood before them. Saturno’s Big Gator in Miami belongs firmly to the second category, a piece whose demolition didn’t erase it, but instead reminded everyone just how deeply it had embedded itself in the city’s visual memory.

A wall that survived against all odds

When Saturno learned the mural was gone, it wasn’t through an official notice or a polite email, it was through a tag on Instagram. Someone filmed the wall being torn down, and just like that, the first mural he ever painted in Miami (back in 2019) was reduced to rubble. This loss doesn’t stand alone! It’s part of a much larger transformation:

a significant portion of Wynwood’s street art heritage is currently being torn down to make way for redevelopment, reshaping the neighborhood that once served as one of the world’s most vibrant open-air galleries.

And yet, Saturno’s reaction wasn’t sadness. It was almost disbelief that the piece had lasted seven years in an abandoned lot at the end of a dead-end street, a place with no protection, no institutional backing, and no guarantee of survival. Parts of it had already been painted over, weathered, and worn. In street art terms, seven years is an eternity.

The story behind the gator

The mural wasn’t just a random wall. It marked a turning point, the beginning of Saturno’s Miami chapter. The decision to travel there, the context he stepped into, the way that first wall led directly to a second mural inside Mana Wynwood… it’s all part of a longer narrative he documented in detail.

The footage shows the wall in its prime: the textures, the scale, the environment, and the unmistakable presence of the gator staring down anyone who approached.

Ephemerality as a feature, not a flaw

Street art lives outside the safety nets of museums and private collections. Walls get demolished. Lots get redeveloped. Paint fades. And artists know this.

Would it be respectful to notify artists before a mural is removed? Absolutely. But in the wild, unregulated spaces where many iconic pieces are born, that’s rarely how things work.

And yet, disappearance doesn’t equal loss.
A mural that has been photographed, shared, visited, and loved has already fulfilled its purpose. When the wall goes, the experience remains.

From wall to memory — and now to print

The demolition sparked a strong reaction online. People who had visited the mural, or who had always wanted to, suddenly felt the weight of its absence. That collective response inspired Saturno to close the chapter in a meaningful way: with a limited edition print, accessible to those who felt connected to the piece.

If the wall can’t be visited anymore, at least the image can continue to live in another form.

“When a piece disappears, it doesn’t invalidate it. It simply changes format, from a physical wall to memory and archive.”

What the gator leaves behind

More than a striking image, the mural represented intention, an artist traveling across the world to give his best to a specific place. Saturno hopes people remember that gesture: the commitment, the effort, the desire to leave something meaningful behind.

Because when someone makes the trip to see a mural in person, stands in front of it, and experiences it directly, that moment carries real value. The wall may be gone, but the experience doesn’t vanish with it.

The natural flow of Street Art

This isn’t the first time one of Saturno’s murals has disappeared, and it won’t be the last. But each disappearance reinforces a truth he already embraces: nothing in the street is permanent.

Instead of loss, he sees movement. Evolution. A push to create new ideas, find new contexts, and connect in new ways.

“What matters isn’t how long a wall lasts, what matters is staying true to why you go out and paint in the first place.”
